Our Heritage
A legacy of the land
The roots of Muldersvlei run deep in the Stellenbosch Winelands. The land was first granted in 1714 to Johannes Mulder, the first Landdros of Stellenbosch. It became known as Muldersvlei — “Mulder’s marsh” — in his honour.
The Starke family’s connection to the farm began in 1890, when James Starke purchased Muldersvlei. Across the generations, the farm has changed with the land and the times — from wheat, horses, vineyards and cattle to many years of dairy farming, and today to lemons and cattle. Today, Julian Christopher Starke and his wife Helen farm the land with their children.
The Guesthouse
The guesthouse occupies the original stable and dairy workers’ quarters, built in 1814. Helen recognised the potential of the historic building and converted it into seven en-suite rooms, creating a peaceful guesthouse separate from the Manor House. Today, Juliette manages the guesthouse under Helen.
Weddings & Special Occasions
Helen also established Muldersvlei as a wedding and events venue, opening the farm’s historic spaces to celebrations. Juliette and Natalie now manage the venue and events, continuing the warm, personal hospitality for which Muldersvlei is known.
